Delightfully Dark Style
Carolyn Jones will always be my sentimental favourite in the role of Morticia Addams, but that doesn't mean that I don't appreciate Anjelica Huston's darkly delightful interpretation of the character in the movies, The Addams Family (1991), and Addams Family Values (1993).
While I loved the black tentacled dress that Carolyn Jones wore in The Addams Family television series (1964 - 1966), Angelica Huston's much expanded movie wardrobe did result in plenty of sartorial Gothic eye candy.

She was always my favourite, what a beautiful woman.
ReplyDeleteHi Laury,
DeleteAnjelica Huston is such a striking and charismatic actress. She did the role justice, which I think is no easy task. :)
I read an interview with her where she said the way she walked in the dress was easily achieved; it was so tight she had no other choice. And lunch, well forget that too. lol!

Hi Ali,
DeleteHaha. Yes those dresses don't look very forgiving! She looked fabulous though, so I guess missing a few lunches paid off. ;)
Anjelica is my favourite, love her so much, grew up watching The Addams Family films
ReplyDeleteHi Samantha,
Delete"Huston-Pardo"? You're not related to Anjelica Huston are you? How cool would that be?!! :)
Yes, the nineties movies were wonderful! Anjelica Huston and Raul Julia were an absolutely awesome pair!
*Swoon* Addams Family, Morticia, what could be better? :)
ReplyDeleteI loved Carolyn Jones too, she seemed completely natural as Morticia, no acting involved! I love Angelica too, but she is more theatrical and nothing wrong with that. I agree - her film wardrobe was wonderful! You've put a big smile on my face this afternoon just looking at these photos of Angelica and the sadly missed Raul Julia. x
Hi Siobhan,
DeleteAww... you always make me feel great when you pop around for a visit! Thank you! I'm very happy to be in any way responsible for a little Addams-bliss! :)
I totally agree with you. Carolyn Jones inhabited that role in such a special way. She was so charming and elegant, but always with an edge. As you say, Anjelica played it with more drama and theatricality, which, of course, was wonderful in its own way.
Ah wonderful, love the Addams flicks.
ReplyDeleteSeen them both in theater and countless times on TV. Unfortunately, it's about 6-7 years ago when I last seen them. It's definitely time for a rewatch.
Question:
I'll definitely want to do Addams-review later this year (Oct, Nov). Since you're an expert on all things Addams and Gothic, I'd love to do a double review with you, or something like that.
No plans yet. The idea just popped into my head.
Would you like to join in?
Hi Maynard,
DeleteThey showed both the Addams Family movies on TV here just recently, so I had a great excuse to rewatch them. Not that I ever need an excuse, mind you! Haha.
I'm always up for anything Addams-related, so if you decide to go ahead with your idea, just let me know! :)
I definitely wanna do this, I just haven't exactly figured out, how this blog post should turn out - but I'll let you know soon!
DeleteGreat! :)
DeleteThink I prefer Angelica Huston too, but maybe it's because I'm too young to know well the television series. And she is soo classy all the time anyway :-)
ReplyDeleteHi Mademoiselle G,
DeleteI agree, Anjelica Huston is total class!
I saw reruns of 'The Addams Family' television series when I was very young and it made a huge impression on my little psyche, but it was when I got the DVDs a few years ago, that I really fell in love. I'm completely obsessed now! :)
Carolyn will always be my favorite. I didn't hate Angelica Huston in the role for the movies, though; I felt like she was the best choice available. And I'm usually fiercly loyal to my original actresses (never get me started on Catwoman; I do not shut up).
ReplyDeleteI would have loved to see Bebe Neuworth as Morticia in the musical, but of course a different actress played the role in the touring production my husband and I saw.
Hi Guin,
DeleteI know exactly what you mean. Carolyn Jones and John Astin are my Morticia and Gomez. I did enjoy the movies very much, and I thought Anjelica Huston and Raul Julia were great, but I think I've reached my limit now. I'd find it very hard to accept yet another new Morticia and Gomez.
Did you enjoy the musical? I haven't heard the best reports about it. It's coming to Australia soon.
I'll have to say that Carolyn Jones would be my favorite. Her delivery of her lines made the character work.
ReplyDeleteNever saw the movie but I feared it wouldn't measure up. Remakes often don't.
Hi Lorelei,
DeleteWell, Carolyn Jones is my favourite too, but I did enjoy the movies, 'The Addams Family' and 'Addams Family Values'. They had a very different tone to the television show, but they were very funny in their own way, and Anjelica Huston and Raul Julia gave wonderful performances. :)
I've always felt like these actresses were portraying two totally different characters that both happened to be named Morticia. :) Carolyn Jones had this sweet, wholesome, motherly thing going on (at least in my mind). Angelica Huston seemed more like a seductive sorcerous. I love both portrayals for different reasons. Carolyn's Morticia seems a little more fun to hang out with, though!
ReplyDeleteHi Justine,
DeleteYes, I agree, it's impossible to really compare the two actresses, or even the movies to the TV series, because they're so different. They're both funny, but in such different ways. I definitely enjoyed the movies, but the television show is like comfort food to me. :)
Completely agree....loved those costumes. Now that you mention it....I think it is time to watch this movie again!
ReplyDeleteCheers!
Hi The Frog Queen,
DeleteCreating clothes for Addams Family characters must be such a dream job for a costume designer. Yes, I'm ready to watch the movies again too! Of course, being the Addams Family tragic that I am, I'm always in the mood for their brand of creepy and kooky! :D
I really love that dress! :)
ReplyDeleteHi Jenny,
DeleteMorticia has the most awesome wardrobe! :)
Some of the People of my area have begun to post Very "unpleasant" comments about Stacey.... They have the Truth "distorted" ...really has poor "Stacey" not doing very well...
ReplyDeleteHi Dr. Theda,
DeleteI'm so sorry to hear that. I hope things improve for you. Best wishes!
