May Mad Hat Day 2015

This is my wee contribution to the May Mad Hat Day celebrations hosted by delightful Debi of Puddleduck Grange. I decided to make Phoebe a tiny top hat... because every little cat should have a top hat... right?!

After searching the internet for tutorials, I finally found one for making mini, paper, burlesque-style top hats. I had to scale down the template to make the brim small enough to fit between Phoebe's ears and then figure out how to make it in felt rather than paper. I then set to work with some cardboard, felt, glue, scissors, and an endless stream of profanities... as it was a diabolically fiddly undertaking. Anyhoo, I finally got it made, and I've been popping it on the poor cat's head all week, and chuckling madly... as any mad hatter is wont to do. ;)

Thank you for visiting, and to see more mad hats, stroll on over to Puddleduck Grange for links to the other May Mad Hat Day participants.

  1. My cat would never sit still long enough, with a hat on his head, for me to get a photo. Love it!

    1. Thank you, Hal! Phoebe is an indoor cat and gets lots of handling so she's not fazed by these kinds of shenanigans. The hardest part is usually keeping her awake. She tends to start nodding off during photo shoots. ;)

  2. Oh Phoebe! You have IT! Kitty, in spades! Your image is peeeerrrrfection, and allowing your handler endless hours of roller- coaster emotion is the ultimate Madness!
Thank you so much you Both! I am delighted and proud to have met a budding Supermodel! Huge Canadian Hug! xo

    1. Yes, I think she really needs a cape and cane now... just to complete the look, Debra! :D

  4. I thought maybe you'd photoshopped that hat onto Phoebe, because I couldn't imagine her actually letting you put it on her head, Little Gothic Horrors! Fiddly or no, you did a most excellent job and I think it was an excellent choice of styles. Listen up, Phoebe - it could have been much worse! :D

    1. Thank you, Insomniac's Attic! Haha. Yes, it could have been much worse! A Lydia Deetz wedding costume was probably the worst thing she's had to endure. The tulle kept floating about, and being a cat, the movement kept catching her eye and distracting her.

    1. Phoebe loves attention, Variations On Light! Despite the dour expression, she purrs her way through these photo sessions, and the funniest part, she comes and sits beside me while I'm checking the photos on the computer. :D

  9. Have to admit I'm insanely jealous of the hat.

My roommate attempted reindeer antlers on my cat a few years ago. Did not go well!

  12. Oh my, I don't know what I'm most impressed with the hat or that you got it to stay on Pheobe while you took a photo. I think Pheobe wins it by a whisker, my animals wouldn't have lasted long enough for me to even pick the camera up. Pheobe has definite supermodel looks she's looks like the cat who certainly got the cream.

    1. The hat did topple off a number of times, Jane. I considered attaching some hat elastic to it so it would stay put, but that would probably have bothered her, whereas she was very relaxed about the hat just sitting on her head. Yes, Phoebe's rocking the supermodel 'tude! :D

  13. Well, Phoebe looks delightful in her top hat. I love the look on her face, like she's considering whether or not to rip someone's throat... or at least scratch them.

Well, I invited Phoebe to be a character in my contribution to the party. And oh my goodness, I never knew Phoebe was this awesome! :-D

    1. I was dangling a cat toy on a string to get her to look in that direction, Magaly, so she did pounce at it a couple of times... and sent the poor hat flying! Haha.

When you and Phoebe get together, the awesomeness knows no bounds!! :D ♥

  14. Queue the music, Phoebe is in touch with her inner Astaire in your stunning handmade hat and i can now picture her dancing and tapping her way to the Whiskers Cafe... Throw her a cane and bow-tie, I think the photo shows she is ready for her close-up. So cute Emma!!!

  16. Oh, you wicked thing, you! And that is a perfect hat! So neat! (Yes, they are fiddly little buggers, aren't they, which is why I don't make them very often!) Phoebe's expression of disdain is too perfect!

    1. Phoebe was fine with having the hat on her head, Ana. :D The only problem was that it would fall off when she moved, so I had to keep popping it back on.

  22. I can't believe how tolerant Phoebe is for hats, I don't think my cats would let something stay on their heads for more than a second :)

    1. Our other cat, Sabrina (sadly no longer with us), was even more accommodating than Phoebe. Maybe cats from the Siamese family are just particularly complaisant. I'm not sure.
