Happy Halloween 2013!

Phoebe the Graveyard Cat

Phoebe turned 18 on October 6. She doesn't look her age at all, and she's still as cheeky as a kitten, so it was a big shock to us when she suddenly began having seizures earlier this year. I can't say that 2013 has been especially fun -- we seem to have had more tricks than treats -- but Phoebe's health issues have definitely been the worst part. My husband, son and I were afraid we were going to lose this much loved, furry member of our family.

After many (expensive) trips to the vet, the most we could establish for certain was that she had very high blood pressure. (Yes, apparently cats get hypertension.) She now takes daily medication, and thankfully, she appears to be back to her old (young) self. In fact, she's purring contentedly on my lap as I type this.

Anyhoo, considering the stressful time she's had lately, I decided to spare her the indignity of a Halloween costume this year, and just settled for a shot of her frolicking about my faux indoor graveyard set. My 16 year old son, who has become very interested in filmmaking, has made a (very) short film starring Phoebe the Graveyard Cat and I hope to post it in the next few weeks.

In case you missed it last year, here's a shot of Phoebe in her 2012 "Lydia Deetz" Halloween costume, made by me.

Happy Halloween, everybody!

  2. The picture of her frolicking in the “graveyard” is just beautiful! It's awful to have a sick pet, isn't it? I'm glad she's feeling better with the medication. A very Happy Hallowe'en to you and yours as well, Little Gothic Horrors! I'm excited to see your son's film! :D

    1. Thank you, Insomniac's Attic! Yes, I was so worried about her, but the medication has brought her blood pressure back to normal, so we're crossing our fingers that the seizures won't return. :)

I'm excited about James' film as well! :) He's having fun playing around with editing software, so I'm really looking forward to seeing what he does with the footage he got.

A very Happy Halloween to you and yours too! :D

  3. About a year ago, my 19 year old cat Zebra (who REALLY doesn't look her age) got high blood pressure too. She was very bad when it started, but thankfully, medicine helped greatly.

    Happy Halloween, Emma!

  4. Happy Halloween Emma! It's dark, misty and slightly creepy here in Ireland this Halloween morning - just purrrfect for trick or treating later on! Hugs to Phoebe - I know how incredibly stressful and worrying it is to have a sick animal family member. Hopefully the meds will help her feel her kitten-y self again. The frolicking photo is divine, she is a beautiful girl. *hugs*

    1. Ooooh, sounds purrfect indeed, Siobhan! ;D And a Happy Halloween to you too! ❤ It's almost 7PM on All Hallows Eve here and it's still bright and sunny outside. *groan* But we've just had some cute and polite little trick or treaters come to the door, so that was fun! We've got a nice dinner planned plus Tim Burton's, 'Sleepy Hollow', so all in all, I can't complain. :D

  5. Aww she's adorable. Is she a siamese cat? We had one that became 19 years old and she was also very youthful until she got health problems. I'm glad that she's got the medication and is back on her old track again.

    1. Thanks, linnea-maria! Technically, she's a Tonkinese, which is a mix between a Burmese and a Siamese, but she is VERY Siamese, particularly her voice. She never stops talking! :D Yes, I'm so relieved that the medication is working!

Wishing you and yours a very Happy Halloween!

  7. Awwwh, she's so stinkin' cute! I'm so surprised at how well behaved she is in those costumes, I can't put anything on my cat without her freaking out and running like a lunatic all over the house trying to shake it off (we like to put stickers one her just to watch the show). I'm glad Phoebe is feeling like her old self again and I hope she brings you many more happy memories (and hopefully many more silly Halloween costumes) for many more years to come! Happy Halloweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeen!!!

    1. Thank you, Sandy! ❤ My other cat, Sabrina, was even more tolerant of my shenanigans. :D Phoebe has always been an indoor cat and gets LOTS of handling, so I guess she's just used to it, plus the Siamese in her might be a factor. Yes, I hope she's around for lots and lots more silly Halloween costumes too! :) She was meant to be the Bride of Frankenstein this year, so she had a lucky escape... for now! ;D

      Happy Halloween!

  16. Happy Halloween, A bit late (internet has not been my friend these past couple of days)
I love Phoebe in her Lydia costume. She's beautiful and I never would have guessed 18. That's awesome. I'm glad to hear she in back to her happy self. It's never fun when a pet gets sick. Hope your holiday was a fun one!

    1. Thanks, Jessie! :) Yes, I've had my share of issues with the internet lately too, so I feel your pain. We've got a long weekend here in Melbourne, so I'm stretching the Halloween festivities out. Fun food and Halloweenie movies every night! :D

I was really pleased with Phoebe's Lydia costume, but it wasn't the easiest one to photograph her in. The tulle kept moving and distracting her. She's a real angel putting up with my shenanigans. ;) We're so grateful that the medication is helping her.

    1. Thanks, Mina! Wish I could leave the "graveyard" up as a permanent installation, but I don't have enough room. Actually, if I ever win the lottery and get my own gothic mansion, I'll have a permanent "graveyard" room... and while we're dreaming, I'd like a real gothic graveyard next door! Haha.

And thank you! I'm glad she's doing better too! ❤
