I'm afraid I can't tell you very much at all about J. E. Larson, other than he's male, an artist, and possesses a darkly whimsical imagination. Any profile that he has written about himself seems to be more a wild flight of fancy than a standard "about me" type blurb.
The subjects of his artwork range from eerie Victorian Gothic themes to Alice in Wonderland nonsense and Batman.
Ooh, these look awesome! Very nifty artwork!
ReplyDeleteHi Chris,
DeleteYes, of the illustrators I've discovered online, he is definitely amongst my favourites! :)
How beautiful!
ReplyDeleteYou do find the best things of the internet, I love seeing your new discoveries :)
Thanks, Laury! :) I actually discovered this artist when I was googling for information on Edward Gorey. One of J. E. Larson's illustrations had been mislabelled as Gorey's work. I went searching for more of his art after that. I love it!
DeleteI love illustrations and these are fucking awesome... I'll search more about this artist.
ReplyDeleteXoxo
Yes, there are lots more cool illustrations to see in his shop, Mayara! :) I would have provided a link for his website too, but currently it seems to be only a landing page. I know I've been able to see his artwork there in the past, but maybe the site is being worked on.
DeleteThis is my kind of art! I LOVE it!
ReplyDeleteMine too, Laura!!! :D
DeleteThis is interesting art for sure. I especially like the Victorian material.
ReplyDeleteYes, I like the Victorian material too, Nightwind! The illustrations are quite rich and evocative. They have the ambience of classic, old-school ghost stories.
DeleteDo you think he's really from Transylvania, Little Gothic Horrors? ;o)
ReplyDeleteHaha. Who knows, Insomniac's Attic?!! He's an enigma wrapped in a riddle, surrounded by mystery, shrouded in a conundrum... ;D
DeleteActually, a Facebook friend commented that he's a very sweet person, so obviously someone knows a lot more about him than me. I'll have to ask her for more information. :D
Love the Gothic Victorian artwork. Not so sure about Batman.
ReplyDeleteHi Vivienne,
DeleteYes, the Victorian Gothic illustrations are probably my favourites. I do like the Batman ones too, though. I'm a Batman fan. :D They're in Tim Burton's 'Batman'/'Batman Returns' style, which I love, but they also have a quaint, Sherlock Holmes-y/detective mystery quality about them that I find really appealing.
Love these drawings. It's amazing to see every little line like that.
ReplyDeleteI love the line-work too, Ms Misantropia! It gives the images a beautiful, vintage feel!
DeleteHow delightful!! Very very interesting pieces of art and i love into a b&w sketch, red things to pop out. :) They are truly adorable!!
ReplyDeleteHi Magda,
DeleteBlack and white with the occasional red accent is my favourite colour palette. Plus, I just love the subject matter he chooses for his art and there's so much gorgeous detail to absorb. :)
I love coming across illustrators that I've never heard of before.
ReplyDeleteHis work truly is amazing and does indeed put me in mind of Edward Gorey.
I need to find more - thank you for the link : )
Hi Winter Moon,
DeleteI've had an obsession with illustration going right back to my childhood story books. Even though my son is way beyond picture books, I still buy kid's books with gorgeous artwork... just for me! ;D
I think one of the best things about the internet is having access to the work of creative people who you may never have heard of otherwise. :)
Lovely artwork. I wish I could draw like this!
ReplyDeleteYes, his art is so beautiful, linnea-maria! His line-work creates such depth and richness. Sort of lush... in a gloriously dark way. :)
DeleteOooooh, I like! The Edward Gorey-ness jumped right out at me! I wonder, has he illustrated any books? I may have to look into this. Thanks again for introducing yet another fantastic artist!
ReplyDeleteHi Sandy,
DeleteI'm sure there must be more, but I've found at least one book that he illustrated called 'Man-Eating Socks'. It seems to be a very Burtonesque children's book.

The Victorian imagery above looks like it belongs in a fabulously creepy story set in a haunted mansion. If it was a book, I'd snap it up in an instant! :D
Wow, beautiful drawings! Interesting style, very retro, very oldschool. Love the Batman drawings, though I can't say if I find them lovely or uncanny. Excellent!
ReplyDeleteYes, very old school, Maynard! His illustrations look like they would be at home in some of those vintage pulp horror magazines like 'Weird Tales'. I know what you mean about the Batman drawings. They're quite eerie, although in sort of a delightfully quaint way.
DeleteWonderful! Especially the first one since it took me a while to find the woman's head -- it was like a game! lol
ReplyDeleteHahaha. Yes, there's nothing quite like a relaxing game of "Spot the Head", Lexa! ;D
DeleteHahahaha OMG. Awesome idea for me!
