May Monster Madness: Day 2

The Sandworm in Beetlejuice

On each day of May Monster Madness, I'm featuring a different "monster" from some of my favourite movies. Today it's the Sandworm from Beetlejuice.

After their untimely deaths, Barbara and Adam Maitland discover they are ghosts, destined to haunt their former home. Any attempt to cross the boundary of their allotted haunting results in them being thrown into another dimension, referred to as "Saturn", populated by giant, menacing sandworms.

  1. I'd forgotten about the Sandworm in Beetlejuice, large and menacing and not even as friendly as the sand worms from Dune ;P

    1. Hi Sophie,

Haha. Well, nothing in 'Beetlejuice' is overly menancing, even the sandworms. The sandworm is more like a naughty puppy when Barbara gives it a whack on the nose. ;)

    1. Hi tfwalsh,

'Beetlejuice' is one of a handful of my all-time favourite movies, so I had to have a Beetlejuice-y monster in the MMM mix! :)

  3. I love that movie so much! The sandworm also reminds me of the movie Tremors.

  6. I have to say, Beetlejuice is one of my absolute favs of all time! We have a joke in our house with a family friend. If you repeat his name 3 times, he'll show up, unannounced. ;) I'm just glad he isn't creepy like Beetlejuice. The Sandworm is a great monster for MMM!

    1. Hi Candilynn,

Ha! Well, I'm glad your friend isn't as obnoxious as the ghost with the most! ;) 'Beetlejuice' is one of my all-time faves too, so I just had to include a sandworm in MMM.

  9. That was such a creative way to solve the plot problem of "why don't they just leave?". And Beetlejuice is one of my fave movies of all time, but more because if its namesake.

    1. Hi Beverly,

I agree, it was a creative way to have the Maitlands trapped within a certain specified area, and adding the concept of other dimensions into the ghostie mix was actually food for thought amidst all the fun shenanigans.
