Season of the (Kitty) Witch

It's the Equinox, and in Australia it's autumn, so even though Halloween may still be many months away, it's hardly surprising that a little cat's thoughts might turn to pondering possible costume choices.

As always, Phoebe put the supermodels to shame during her photo session, but as you can see, by the end of it she was pretty tuckered out.

Her cute, tiny witch's hat is from lostsentiments on Etsy.

Tim Burton Exhibition Lands in Paris

I was fortunate enough to attend Tim Burton: The Exhibition when it came to Melbourne in 2010. As I understand it, Melbourne's ACMI (Australian Centre for the Moving Image) was only the second venue to host the exhibition after MoMA (The Museum of Modern Art) in New York. I stood in a queue with my husband, son, and a friend for 3 hours (necessitating  a couple of coffee runs, and an inevitable stampede to the bathrooms once we finally got inside) and was entertained along with the rest of the crowd by the sight of a headless horseman driving a coach, drawn by plumed horses, around the city streets. The long wait was definitely worth it, despite the fact that the Beetlejuice-style carousel exhibit broke down the day we were there, as we experienced a fabulous showcase of Tim Burton's work.

Of course, the flip side of the privilege of being one of the first cities to see the Tim Burton exhibition is that as it moves on around the globe, more memorabilia will naturally become available to go on show. The exhibition is currently taking place at La Cinematheque Francaise in Paris, and includes items from Tim Burton's upcoming Dark Shadows, including the red dress worn by Eva Green in the movie, and other costume accessories.

Delightfully Dark Art

Maleficent and Captain Hook

Thanks to my recent infatuation with the Once Upon a Time television series, I've had dark fairy tales on the brain of late. This has led to much googling of evil queens and wicked witches, which in turn caused me to stumble upon an absolutely magnificent interpretation of Maleficent, the villain from Disney's 1959 adaption of Sleeping Beauty, by Arnaud de Vallois.

Happy Halloween and Glad Rags

After a little more searching, I tracked down the San Diego based artist and asked him if I could share some of his work here, to which he graciously agreed. I've just picked some of my favourites, but there are a whole lot more delightfully dark goodies to behold at Arnaud de Vallois Art Blog.

Delightfully Dark Finds: Burke and Hare Co.

Burke and Hare Co. sells Victorian inspired candles and home decor items, and is one of my favourite shops on Etsy. The store is named after the infamous William Burke and William Hare who committed a series of murders in Edinburgh, Scotland, from November 1827 to October 1828 in order to sell the corpses for anatomical dissection. This is how owner, Erica, describes her business:
"I have taken my inspiration from that unique partnership and created my store around the legend and interesting aesthetics of that strange time in history. I find beauty in medical sciences, technological advances, innovation, superstitions of the past, spiritualism, gentlemen and lady's parlors, seances, nature and romanticism."
Featured above, from left to right, are Burke and Hare Co. Poison and Antidote Cups, Gravestone Candle Votives, Skull Candle, and Edgar Allan Poe Postcards.
