Delightfully Dark Finds

Handbook for the Recently Deceased
Replica by Killer Boots

In Tim Burton's movie, Beetlejuice, the "Handbook for the Recently Deceased" is a manual to aid ghosts with their transition to the afterlife, and now, one of several of the original prop handbooks is up for auction by a production assistant who worked on the film. The current bid is $3,250.

If you're interested, you can check out the auction here, but if that price is a little too steep, I've discovered that an Etsy shop, Killer Boots, sells fabulous, reasonably priced replicas like the one pictured above.

    1. Hi VainGlorySinner,

Yeah, the original prop is pretty expensive. I'll be interested to see how high the bidding goes. I've been amusing myself with fanciful notions that Tim Burton is the bidder. I can't remember the handbook prop being part of the Tim Burton exhibition, so it would be a great inclusion. Of course, my other fanciful notion is that I will win the lottery this week, then swoop in and buy it at the last moment! ;)

The book pictured is the replica available on Etsy, and it's only $20.00, which I thought was a pretty great price!

  2. That's so cool! I think I might just have to buy that and have it displayed in my horror room. There are a lot of Beetlejuice posts running around. Or I just have Beetlejuice on my mind since I made a post about the movie. :D

Yeah, it is cool! I got so excited when I stumbled across this replica. Haha. These days, I tend to have Tim Burton movies on my mind most of the time.

    1. Hi Adsila,

I think I read somewhere that the original prop is a repurposed psychology book. It would be really cool if the pages inside the book were full of Beetlejuice-y illustrations and text!

  6. Warner Bros. Stores sold a paper book jacket of this cover for a while.... The Beetlejuice illustrations in the book would be cool....

    1. Hi Dr. Theda,

Wow, I didn't know that! It would be fun to use the jacket to cover a book with blank pages, then fill the pages with Beetlejuice imagery, or, for the very crafty, your own interpretation of the instructions for the recently deceased. :)

  7. I just got around to reading the description on the auction page. I was wondering what was inside the book. How funny that it's an old psychology text book that's been painted on! The replicas look like a nice, less expensive alternative. You could probably easily make your own!

    1. Hi Justine,

Yeah, I keep thinking of Adam's line: "This book reads like stereo instructions." Haha.

I know we've already discussed this in Twitterland, but it would have been so cool if the book had been filled with drawings and information like the 'Grimm' book.

    1. HI Autumn,

I checked and the auction is over, but they didn't reveal the final bid. I wonder how high the bidding went in the end? I think you have to register with the site to find out. It would be nice if the book went into some sort of public display so that fans could enjoy it too. I keep kind of hoping that Tim Burton is the bidder, then the book could join the other memorabilia in the Tim Burton Exhibition.
